Welcome
to a Simple Church
Simple.
Isn't it refreshing when things are simple? Don't you find rest when things are
simple? From the simple pleasure of an easy chair to a calming rain, simple pleasures
bring refreshment and rejuvenate the soul.
This
is what church should be. It should be simple, refreshing and offer a time of
rejuvenation. Church should be clear, concise and concrete. Grace should be easy
to find. Love easily felt with truth revealed and truth applied. The process of
becoming a disciple of Christ should be clearly marked and never walked alone.
But make
no mistake, simple isn't necessarily easy. Losing weight is simple, eat less,
but losing weight isn't easy. Being financially stable is simple, spend less than
you make, but becoming financially stable isn't easy. Salvation is simple, accept
Jesus Christ as your Savior, but salvation was not simple - God became flesh,
dwelt among us, was put to death and then rose from the grave. That is simple
to understand but not easy to grasp.
Do
you see what we mean? Simple means we focus on the majors. Simple means we remove
barriers to entry. Simple means we extend grace to others. Simple means we keep
things, well, simple. Becoming a disciple of Christ is hard enough, so let's not
make it any more complicated than it already is. Let's keep the journey of becoming
a disciple, well, simple.
If
we have to state it from the negative, Simple doesn't mean truth is removed so
we all can feel good. Simple doesn't mean that God's standards are lowered so
everyone feels accepted into his presence with or without Christ. Simple simply
means simple.
How
do we keep "Making Disciples" simple? First, let's make the journey
clear. A clear map is better than one so filled with details you get lost in the
fine print. A disciple is one who is learning to Love God, Love One Another and
Serve Others. Second, let's keep the journey concise. A disciple is one who is
learning to Love God, Love One Another and Serve Others. Third, let's make the
journey easy to communicate. A disciple is one who is learning to Love God, Love
One Another and Serve Others. Did you notice the repetition? Rather simple isn't
it?
One
who is maturing in Christ is one who is ever increasing in their Love of God,
Love for One Another and Service to Others. That's what a disciple does because
that is exactly what Jesus did. He loved God, Loved Others and Served.
So
there you go. We believe if we can create a healthy, simple, and nurturing environment,
the Spirit will be set free to work in each person's life. We believe the best
environment for the Spirit to work is one that is Simple.
